The Myth of Talent Management: do organisations really know how to manage talent?

Written by Sanderson Recruitment | Blog | Posted 29/07/2014

The term ‘Talent Management’ has been used extensively around the board room since McKinsey coined the expression ‘the war for talent’ in the 90’s. However, there continues to be considerable debate within organisations about what constitutes talent, how it should be managed and its importance in driving development and change. It is now widely recognised that having the wrong people or too few people within an organisation, is costly and exposes them to increased risk.

To discuss the issues surrounding talent management and dispel or prove the myth, Chris Bleakley, Head of Resourcing & Talent at Aldermore Bank will be leading our round table dinner. Chris has specialised in the development and implementation of total resourcing solutions, and over the years made talent attraction and selection strategies a key focus.

Considering talent management from a commercial, academic and emotional perspective the debate will focus on the following areas:

How often does the resignation of a key employee highlight weakness in an organisations succession planning?
Do we properly differentiate between ‘the skill’ and ‘the will’?
Is the concept of talent development within a single organisation an anathema to a 21st Century workforce?
Is talent management about the external market as much of the internal?
